INTELLIGENT SAFETY 2.0 FOR LIGHT RAIL

MTR CORPORATION

Back to Hall of Fame

Developed by MTR for Hong Kong’s Light Rail, Intelligent Safety 2.0 is a pioneering platform that integrates AI, IoT, and computer vision to enhance safety across 230 crossings and 90 junctions in a street-level environment shared with pedestrians and vehicles. It introduces practical, certified innovations like the Integrated Speed and Position Supervision System (iSPS), which enables real-time monitoring and automatic braking, and AI-powered computer vision, which detects hazards instantly.

Passenger-focused features include smart road-rail crossings, visual/vocal alerts, and next-train displays. Designed by young in-house engineers, the system is modular and scalable, ensuring cost-effective upgrades without disrupting service. Since implementation, safety alerts have dropped by over 50%, improving reliability and reducing stress for Train Captains.

What makes Intelligent Safety 2.0 stand out is its real-world impact and scalability. Already patented in Hong Kong and the UK, it has gained international interest and won top innovation awards in Hong Kong and Geneva. More than a technical upgrade, it builds public trust and contributes to smart city goals by making transit safer, more inclusive, and more sustainable.

Intelligent Safety 2.0 shows how technology can protect people, enrich daily life, and serve as a global model for urban mobility.

Safer Journeys, Stronger Communities

Highlights
  • Integrative applications of computer vision, AI, and IoT with legacy railway systems, including the train management system and passenger information system. Provides real-time supervision, alerts and proactive safety protocols.
  • Home-grown, patented SIL-2 system that has reduced safety alert scenarios by 50%, providing a safe journey for over half a million passengers daily.
  • It manages both internal and external factors, using a predictive approach to detect hazards related to driving, platform, and road junction safety. Applies braking to ensure safety in extreme scenarios.
