Speed Regulating Moving Lighting (Pacemaker Lighting) Technology

Eurasia Tunnel

Back to Hall of Fame

Eurasia Tunnel connects the Asian and European sides of Istanbul via a 5 km-long roadway tunnel underneath the seabed which is streamlined with improved approach roads, allows users to complete the intercontinental journey in about 5 minutes. With the state-of-the-art technology and advanced engineering involved in this integrated project connecting continents, tunnel serves as a fast, economic, safe, comfortable and environment-friendly transportation alternative.

In order to regulate the traffic flow, Pacemaker Lighting technology was implemented in Eurasia Tunnel, as a first in Turkey. The Pacemaker Lighting helps regulating the traffic flow speed as 70 km/h in the Europe-Asia direction. It is being operated according to the scenario where 5 meter-length arches move continuously with 80 meters following distance. Implementation starts 500 meters before the deepest point where the decrease in average traffic speed was detected and helps keeping the traffic speed constant.

"A journey guided by the light"

Highlights

  • Avoiding traffic congestion and using the traffic capacity more efficiently
  • Preventing accidents by ensuring the following distance between vehicles
  • Preventing possible engine and transmission problems by enabling vehicles to adjust themselves easily to the traffic speed
  • Protecting environment and preventing air pollution by reducing exhaust gases due to sudden acceleration on uphill
  • Improving the driving comfort in compliance with the thematic lighting concept
